A San Francisco paper states that a system of
wife-stealing has been developed among the Chinese of that city, which seems to be carried
on upon some recognized and semi-legal principle that the Celestials understand and
accept. If a wife be once fairly carried off, that seems to be the end of the matter, the
bereaved husbands only chance of solace being confined to his hopes of carrying off
somebody elses wife. |
